Trampoline park safety, honestly
Trampoline parks are a genuinely great energy burn for the right kid at the right age. They also produce more urgent-care visits than most indoor activities. Both things are true — and the gap between a great afternoon and a bad one comes down to a handful of rules, most of which are within your control.
The one rule that matters most: size separation
Here's the thing safety bodies consistently find when they study trampoline injuries: most of them involve multiple jumpers, usually of different sizes. The physics is unforgiving — when a 50-pound kid and a 150-pound teenager share a bouncing surface, the smaller body absorbs energy it didn't generate. The little kid gets launched, lands wrong, or gets landed on. It's not usually the flips that end the day; it's the mismatch.
So the single most useful thing you can do at a trampoline park is boring: keep your kid jumping with kids their own size and weight. Use the small-jumper courts when the park has them, book toddler time or little-kid sessions when the park runs them, and if a pack of teenagers floods the court your seven-year-old is on, move your kid. You will feel slightly awkward doing it. Do it anyway — it's the highest-value awkwardness available to you.

The rules that do the real work
Every park posts a long rule board. These are the ones that carry the actual safety weight:
- One jumper per trampoline. Same physics as above at smaller scale. Two kids on one square is the classic setup for a collision or a double-bounce launch — the double bounce sends one jumper far higher than they expected, with none of the control. Court monitors enforce this at good parks; you enforce it where they don't.
- No flips for beginners. Flips concentrate the risk on the head and neck, which is exactly where you don't gamble. A kid who wants to learn should learn into a foam pit or on a designated skill court — many parks offer exactly that — not on the open floor on their third visit because a bigger kid did one. Double flips are banned outright almost everywhere, for everyone.
- Grip socks, always. Required at essentially every park, $2–4 if you forget yours. - Jump in the middle, land on two feet, sit down when tired. The unglamorous trio. Landing near the pads and springs is how ankles roll; tired jumpers get sloppy, and sloppy landings on a springy surface are how knees have bad days. Build in breaks — the wristband doesn't expire because your kid drank some water.
What good parks do (and how to spot one)
Parks vary a lot, and you can read the good ones from the lobby:
- Court monitors who actually monitor. Staff stationed at the courts, whistling down double-jumpers and open-floor flip attempts — not one bored teenager watching forty trampolines from a stool. Watch the floor for two minutes before you pay; you'll know.
- Age- and size-separated sessions. Toddler time, little-kid jump hours, or permanently separated small-jumper courts. A park that runs these has internalized the injury data. A park that mixes preschoolers into adult dodgeball has not.
- Honest capacity limits. Good parks cap jumpers per session and per court. If the floor looks like a mosh pit, the price of your wristband included extra collision risk.
- Well-maintained padding and nets — covered springs, intact pads between trampolines, netting without gaps. Frayed pads are a maintenance-culture tell that extends to everything you can't see.

Waivers: what you're actually signing
Every trampoline park requires a liability waiver for every jumper, signed by a parent or legal guardian for minors — no waiver, no wristband, no exceptions. Two practical notes. First, sign it online before you go; it's faster, and most parks keep it on file for a year or more. Second, understand what it is: you're acknowledging that jumping carries inherent risk and agreeing not to sue over ordinary injuries. Waivers generally don't shield a park from gross negligence, but they do mean the routine sprained ankle is on you.
That's not a reason to skip trampoline parks; it's a reason to pick a well-run one and follow the size rules above, because the park has told you plainly who bears the everyday risk. When toddler time is the right call
Honest answer: for kids under about 5, the open-jump floor is the wrong venue. Pediatric safety groups have long urged caution with trampolines for young children — their bones, joints, and coordination aren't built yet for a surface that fights back, and they're the small body in every size mismatch on a mixed floor.
The trampoline park answer for this age isn't "stay home" — it's toddler time: dedicated sessions where the whole floor is reserved for little jumpers, usually with one parent per kid allowed on the courts and the music turned down. Good rule of thumb by age: under 5, toddler-time sessions only; 5–7, little-kid sessions or separated small-jumper courts; 8+, open jump is a reasonable fit for a kid who'll follow the rules. And the rules-following part is the real gate — you know your kid.
